They assail drilling platforms with high-speed boats, seizing foreign nationals for future ransom negotiations. Their primary targets are oil companies, which they accuse of exploiting the nation's natural resources without reciprocation. In this documentary, we followed soldiers, sailors, and pirates over several months, joining them on their raids to unveil their operational methods.

Inside Nigeria’s Most Dangerous City is a documentary about me visiting Borno, Maiduguri which has been named the most dangerous city in Nigeria due to it being the epicenter of the Boko Haram conflict that has ravaged Nigeria for the past couple of years. In this video, I explore different segments of the city and interview lots of people on the ground to get a full story of what really happened here and how it became the most feared place to visit in Africa's most populated country. Attacks by the terrorist group Boko Haram in the village of Kolofata in northern Cameroon have been ongoing since 2013. Despite the terrifying circumstances, a group of children strive to juggle school, housework and fieldwork.

The far north of Cameroon, on the border with Nigeria, is subject to murderous terrorist attacks and therefore under military protection. Although the acts of violence committed by the terrorist group Boko Haram are less frequent now, people here live with a constant, omnipresent threat.

The children here having to cope in a post-apocalyptic situation. The main characters in this tragedy are Falta, Ladji, Ibrahim, Mohammed, Ismaela and Maloum. They are all between four and eleven years old. They live in the village of Kolofata and are trying to build a new future for themselves. The camera captures the unbroken zest for life of these children, who go to school and look after their herds. They are creating their own world amidst the dangers of the armed conflict. We get to know the hard-working Falta, grieving the loss of her father, who died in a terrorist attack. She is eager to learn and asks many questions. Ibrahim and Mohamad, on the other hand, fight a lot. They struggle to reconcile their childlike energy with their traumatic past. The days of innocence are long gone for these children.

When he was 18 years old, Ike Nnaebue left his home nation Nigeria for Europe. But the dangers forced him to give up in Mauretania. Now, he’s now back on the same migration route. This time, as a filmmaker.

These days, Ike Nnaebue is a famous "Nollywood” director, a prominent representative of Nigerian film. When he tried to emigrate to Europe in 1998, he couldn’t see a future for himself in Nigeria. Like so many young people in Africa, he dreamed of a better life in Europe - financially, at least. Now, camera in hand, he’s taking the same journey from Nigeria via Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Mauretania to Tangier in Morocco. Along the route he meets men and women who’ve turned their backs on their homes and who are intent on trying their luck in Europe - despite all the risks and obstacles.

Back in 1998, Ike Nnaebue gave up on his plans after meeting a stranger who warned him of the dangers. Ike ended his journey there and then - and never got as far as Europe. But returning to Nigeria without any money was out of the question. Ike Nnaebue spent two years in Gambia, where he was able to work on several theater and film productions. At the age of 21, he knew what he wanted to do with his life and went back to his family.

Nowadays, social media and TV reports show just how dangerous migration can be, with cases of enslavement, abuse and other crimes committed against those who undertake a journey of this kind. Stories that are impossible to ignore. That’s why Ike Nnaebue decided to retrace his footsteps and try to understand why so many young Africans are still prepared to risk everything for a better life.

Nigeria is plagued by human trafficking. Young women are lured to Europe by false promises. When they get to the EU, they are violently forced into prostitution and kept in debt. An escape is almost impossible.

Many young Nigerian women are drawn to the European Union by promises of good incomes and secure work, but they often pay a high price. The young women and their families go into debt to pay human traffickers for the journey. Once they are in Europe, the women are forced into prostitution rather than working as hairdressers or maids. The organized crime cartels behind this grim trade not only coerce the women and force them to work off their debts, they also threaten to kill their families back in Nigeria. But human rights campaigners say that the trafficking could not survive at all without willing customers.

Hidden deep in the mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta lie hundreds of illegal refineries, “cooking spots”. It’s the stronghold of hostage takers and armed groups. For some ten years these men have been spreading terror in the region. Few cameras have been able to penetrate the closed worlds of these oil thieves. For one month?with the assistance of one of their number?we managed to film the everyday existence of the traffickers. On the one side, Nigeria. An extremely unstable region with economic and political stakes on a global scale. It’s the biggest oil producer in Africa and one of the ten biggest producers in the world. 95% of its revenues derive from this “black gold” On the other side, Western countries, major consumers of fuel, for whom oil is indispensible. Between the two, the inhabitants of the Niger Delta, cast aside from this manna and the enormous profits generated by the “black gold”. Driven by a sense of dispossession, they engage in increasing armed action to deviate a part of the oil production. Nicknamed “Bonny Light”, it’s one of the purest crude oils in the world. It is so pure, they say, that you could run an engine with it without any refining… exactly as it is extracted. However, the robbers of the Delta still have to refine it. They put the “crude” into drums that have been cut in half, heat it and sprinkle it with chemical products. It’s a dangerous operation. It can explode at any moment. So that their clothing doesn’t catch fire and turn them into human torches, the traffickers work naked, in a choking atmosphere, without the slightest protection. They have no other choice. To survive, they must take risks. Once refined, the fuel is put into buckets before being transferred into cans. It is then refined by traditional methods and distributed on the parallel markets of neighbouring countries. This “black gold” road passes via Cameroon, Benin, Togo and Ghana. However, in the Delta, oil is above all a plague. The water is filthy. The earth, fields and forests are polluted. Here, oil is a curse. All the villagers live below the poverty line. In the village of Okrika there is no drinking water or electricity. So, in order to survive, most of the farmers have a strange occupation. They fish for sand. Such is the case of Daniel, 55, who in order to feed his family tirelessly scours the beds of rivers for sand. It’s an unthinkable job, harsh and exhausting, for this new Nigerian slave. Every day, and sometimes at night too, and totally naked, he dives to depths of 5 metres to fill his buckets with sand. When his boat is full, he has to deliver it far away, at the mouth of the river. Once his boat has been unloaded, he must start his labours all over again. Once the oil has been stolen and refined, it has to be delivered. Neighbouring Benin is a major consumer. In the south of the country, along the border, oil trafficking is a real industry that supplies 70% of national consumption. Every day, 25 year-old Antoine risks his life to transport stolen oil on his motorbike. A real “bomb on wheels”, he carries more than 700 litres of oil on each trip, with the sole protection of the Voodoo gods! -

Abductions take place on a massive scale in Nigeria. In one week in March, almost 500 people were abducted in two towns in the north of the country, many of them school children. On average, ten people are kidnapped every day in the country, five times as many as in Mexico and Colombia combined.

In Benin, motorcyclists regularly navigate the chaotic streets with up to 700 litres of diesel strapped to their bikes – one false move and they could become human torches. The daredevil delivery men are supplying to the ubiquitous unlicensed petrol stations, where a litre of illegal fuel can cost just 55 cents. Business is booming, much to the dismay of the government and oil multinationals.

Nigeria, however, is paying a heavy price. Neighbouring Benin, it is the world’s No. 7 oil exporter, but since drilling first began in the 1960s, the ‘blessing’ has proved to be a terrible curse, breeding corruption and crime. Hidden in the natural maze of the mangrove forests are innumerable secret refineries.

Due to the oil trade, over 200 000 litres of oil have been released into the Delta every year for the last half-century. This pollution has choked the land, killed fish and caused severe illnesses in the locals. The authorities estimate that their life expectancy has fallen from 60 to 40 – and things are only getting worse, as communities become increasingly dependent on the black poison to survive. Our journalists brave the smugglers’ violent hostility, infiltrating secret operations and bringing to light the extent of the damage oil has done to the Delta.
