Abstract:
Many Non-Profit organizations around the globe aim to influence social change and improve communities. A method these activists can use to help educate others about their message, mobilize their communities and cause social change is digital activism.

Digital Activism uses digital communication tools to achieve goals of social change. Successful social change campaigns often incorporate creativity and interactivity with a meaningful message for the community.

Let's explore successful strategies for digital activists:
1. Have goals and assess outcomes. Organizations must develop a strategy to achieve their goals, conduct research and assess the outcomes of the campaign efforts to succeed in their digital activism campaign.

2. Provide incentives to bring supporters in & give them a reason to stay. Consider the user's experience and play with digital tools & social media to make communication personal and meaningful.

3. Reinforce traditional means of activism.

4. Mobilize & inspire your followers. Communicating the organization's message and inspiring your followers to mobilize behind that message is by far the most important element of a digital activism campaign.

Clearly, digital activists face many challenges including, but not limited to: Internet user passivity, authenticity, online security, and information overload. These are all very real hurdles activists face, but they are not impossible to overcome.

Understand that your successful digital activism campaign will be comprised of personal sacrifice, great discomfort & wonderful learning opportunities. You will also need brilliant creative thinking to light the fire of social change.

Each of us, even the most cynical politician, has a child inside who desperately wants to do something that is genuinely good. We all want to change the world. So we write letters, hold protests, wave our signs, and argue on social media – but nothing gets better. Thus we lose faith in democracy and convince ourselves that lasting change cannot be achieved. After two decades of fighting the multi-billion dollar greyhound gambling industry and winning, Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil - founders of advocacy group GREY2K USA Worldwide - discovered three core lessons about successful activism. And, not only that, they saved the lives of thousands of dogs along the way. Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil are the cofounders of greyhound protection group, GREY2K USA Worldwide. As a nonprofit entity, GREY2K works to end the cruelty of dog racing and fund greyhound rescue on a global basis. Before obtaining her law degree, Christine worked as Research Director for the New England Anti-Vivisection Society. Christine specializes in pari-mutuel law and has drafted laws to successfully prohibit dog racing in several states and countries. A long-distance runner all of her life, she has competed in seven Boston Marathons to date. Carey has been sourced in hundreds of news articles and testified in favor of stronger greyhound protection laws all across the United States. In his free time, Carey volunteers for various non-profit organizations and is a National Master in chess. Christine and Carey are the co-authors of the new book, Brooklyn Goes Home.

During his conversation with Justin, you'll hear Jason Russell lay out the first sentence of this Stephen Colbert quote, but it's the second, unspoken, part that truly fits with his journey.

During his time as Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Invisible Children, Jason pushed through hurdles that most people never even dream of encountering, showing how honesty, transparency, and passion magnify the impact each of us has on the world.

Invisible Children's KONY 2012 viral phenomenon (that little video with over 100 million views) sparked a movement due in large part to Jason's visionary storytelling, but the effects weren't all positive, especially for the Invisible Children team. While their hyperfocus on a singular goal led to incredible outward success, it also resulted in a breakdown of internal care—a topic that Jason has spoken candidly about in the years following the KONY 2012 campaign.

Doing his part to normalize our conversation around mental health isn't all that Jason brings to the table, though. You'll hear him discuss Oprah and Obama, the spectrum of activism, his reaction to renewed racial tensions in America, and bringing activism to new generations through a radical new project, Broomstick Engine.

Our panel on activism and grassroots change will feature nationally recognized grassroots activists and nonprofit leaders who spend their days working to make positive change on important social, economic and political issues of the day. Panelists will share their expertise on how to organize national campaigns, discuss the intersection of politics and social justice and talk together about the lessons of the past several years of activism, contentious politics and electoral outcomes.

Today, many major corporations spend just as much time telling you about the good they do in the world as they do pitching you products. Which sounds great, but … are these “ethical” companies actually making the world a better place? For all the talk of corporate responsibility, many companies’ actions don’t match their purported values.

Let’s consider some of the evidence. Maybe you’re passionate about social justice. So is the NBA. The league even allowed players to replace the names on their jerseys with activist slogans. But that concern doesn’t seem to extend to, for instance, China’s human rights issues. Maybe because the Chinese arm of the NBA was valued at $5 billion in 2019. That’s when a Houston Rockets executive simply tweeted “Fight for Freedom, Stand with Hong Kong.” The tweet was quickly deleted and led to an official apology from the NBA.

Maybe you’re passionate about empowering women. So were the folks at State Street, the financial services firm that erected the “fearless girl” statue on Wall Street. The sculpture was hailed in some quarters as a feminist triumph. One problem: The company erected the sculpture in the middle of a federal investigation for underpaying its female employees.

Maybe you’re passionate about gay rights. So is Amazon. In June of 2021, the company celebrated pride month by hoisting the pride flag above its Seattle headquarters. And in June of 2022, they celebrated by … removing LGBTQ products from their website in the United Arab Emirates — where the State Department warns that homosexuality can be punished by execution.

What about ESG investing? This type of investing — which stands for environmental, social, and corporate governance — is supposed to encourage sustainability and corporate citizenship. But research actually found that the firms in ESG funds had worse track records of complying with environmental and labor laws than those in non-ESG ones.

All of which points back to one point: It’s easy to *say* you’re in favor of some noble cause. It’s much harder to make the sacrifices necessary to actually live out your beliefs.

What happened in 2021? Covid-19, conflict and climate change have all played their part in devastating lives. But we saw some moments that don't often appear in the headlines. A global movement of people have refused to give in –from delivering clean water and food, to fundraising in their local town, volunteering in their local shop, or travelling the length of the UK on foot for climate justice. These are our favourite moments of activism and optimism in 2021. To everyone who took a stand against poverty and inequality – we say thank you.

Lea Ann Mallett's trajectory as a lifelong activist, from direct action civil disobedience protestor to charity executive director, led her to wonder just that. Lea Ann shares her new definition of activism which will shift the way you see your world, and open your eyes to the power you have to change it. Lea Ann Mallett is a lifelong activist, writer, photographer and a passionate storyteller. The trajectory of Lea Ann’s story has arced through her work as a direct-action wilderness activist for almost two decades as a non-profit executive director. She has engaged media around the world, from the CBC to the BBC, on issues from ancient forest preservation to the protection of monarch butterflies.

Along with her activism, she creates essays on the beauty of life in the wilds of suburbia in her blog Becoming Undomesticated.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology (with a focus on neurophysiology) from Western University, a Bachelor of Education in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Windsor and extensive leadership training.
