Non-profits & Activism
Here on Buzz4Good we often feature the nonprofit's mission.
But today we focus as much on the life story – and world view – of one particular person who works for a nonprofit, Crystal Mello, a community organizer for Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights (http://powhr.org) or POWHR, which has been one of the most influential opponents of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP).
Buzz4Good creator Michael Hemphill's (http://buzz4good.com/creator) conversation with Crystal highlights POWHR's fight against MVP, which got national attention this week as a controversial addition to the federal debt-ceiling bill that got passed by Congress. But just as interestingly, we share Crystal's personal and inspiring path: single mom at 16 years old, her child’s father incarcerated for drugs, survivor of a sexual assault, house-cleaner by trade, and now one of our region’s most passionate and influential community organizers.
It’s a wide-ranging conversation about Crystal’s own surprising journey to community activist and organizer, and an exploration of her worldview that sees the forces responsible for projects like MVP as the same as those that oversee our courts and prison system, climate change, the banking system, drug addiction, and on and on.
Are you a nonprofit with an event that we could help promote? Or a marketing problem we could help fix? Contact us and we’ll share on an upcoming episode.

The United States has more than 1.5 million nonprofits — from homeless shelters, food banks and rescue squads to children’s choirs, science museums and animal refuges — that employ one out of every 10 Americans. Like any company, nonprofits have salaries and bills to pay, a budget to balance. They require money. And if enough people don’t know about them, don’t believe in them, don’t support them — in short, if they lack BUZZ — they suffer and die.

For people concerned with the lack of positive art in our communities, Hip Hop For Change Inc. is the nonprofit that educates and empowers all people with a platform to express themselves through the arts while teaching society about the power of Hip Hop Culture.

Amanda Grainger Munday, Manager, Communications/Social Media - Timeraiser, Framework Foundation
Amanda talks about how you can work smarter, not harder to further your social mission (personal or professional) using web-based tools. The webinar includes a demo of affordable software tools that allow you to easily collaborate with others on projects, as well as share documents, files and budgets. Framework Foundation's technology strategy is to "share information once, distribute it widely and access it in multiple places". Living those values means using low-cost, scalable web tools that allow the team to work from anywhere and more importantly, share information widely with others. It is Amanda's belief that a strong technology strategy lies with the entire team, not just with those in IT. Managing information better leads to greater transparency and accountability in the non-profit sector that often faces technology and organizational barriers.
This webinar was presented as part of SPARKS TALKS - a webinar series featuring women role models in the LIGHT A SPARK campaign. Leading with dynamic powerpoint presentations from experienced and inspiring SPARKS, webinars include an interactive Question & Answer session.

#brand #reputation #solidarity
In these polarizing times, many consumers are voting with their wallets, in favor of brands that are striving to make the world a better place.
People are generally more willing to buy from—and invest in—companies that take a stand on social issues.
Merely stating that you are advocating for a social issue is no longer sufficient because people go out of their way to research different aspects of an organization.

What happened in 2021? Covid-19, conflict and climate change have all played their part in devastating lives. But we saw some moments that don't often appear in the headlines. A global movement of people have refused to give in –from delivering clean water and food, to fundraising in their local town, volunteering in their local shop, or travelling the length of the UK on foot for climate justice. These are our favourite moments of activism and optimism in 2021. To everyone who took a stand against poverty and inequality – we say thank you.

Next is a topic that’s been on everyone’s minds throughout the year. Nonprofits in Ukraine are acting as first responders in the war and are under tremendous stress. But usually the last thing nonprofits worry about is taking care of themselves. That’s why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to the challenges of staying resilient. Anna Kuliberda, Senior Advisor for TechSoup Europe shares more in the next demo.
PRESENTER: Anna Kuliberda
Independent coach and consultant, with a "Humans not robots" perspective. I support activists' initiatives and non-profit organizations in management, innovation, and change. In addition to being the founder of The Radical Act of Self-Care, I specialize in program curation for events with meaning in order to combat activists' burnout. I have been working with TechSoup Europe for 10 years supporting organizations in Central and Eastern Europe.
More about me at www.annakuliberda.com.
DEMONSTRATION
When non-profit organizations are suddenly confronted with a war situation, they face a multitude of challenges. Usually, the last thing on the list is supporting yourself, especially if it wasn't a practice in the pre-crisis era. That is why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to real-life challenges of staying resilient for Ukrainian organizations.
Today, many major corporations spend just as much time telling you about the good they do in the world as they do pitching you products. Which sounds great, but … are these “ethical” companies actually making the world a better place? For all the talk of corporate responsibility, many companies’ actions don’t match their purported values.
Let’s consider some of the evidence. Maybe you’re passionate about social justice. So is the NBA. The league even allowed players to replace the names on their jerseys with activist slogans. But that concern doesn’t seem to extend to, for instance, China’s human rights issues. Maybe because the Chinese arm of the NBA was valued at $5 billion in 2019. That’s when a Houston Rockets executive simply tweeted “Fight for Freedom, Stand with Hong Kong.” The tweet was quickly deleted and led to an official apology from the NBA.
Maybe you’re passionate about empowering women. So were the folks at State Street, the financial services firm that erected the “fearless girl” statue on Wall Street. The sculpture was hailed in some quarters as a feminist triumph. One problem: The company erected the sculpture in the middle of a federal investigation for underpaying its female employees.
Maybe you’re passionate about gay rights. So is Amazon. In June of 2021, the company celebrated pride month by hoisting the pride flag above its Seattle headquarters. And in June of 2022, they celebrated by … removing LGBTQ products from their website in the United Arab Emirates — where the State Department warns that homosexuality can be punished by execution.
What about ESG investing? This type of investing — which stands for environmental, social, and corporate governance — is supposed to encourage sustainability and corporate citizenship. But research actually found that the firms in ESG funds had worse track records of complying with environmental and labor laws than those in non-ESG ones.
All of which points back to one point: It’s easy to *say* you’re in favor of some noble cause. It’s much harder to make the sacrifices necessary to actually live out your beliefs.
