“Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the furthest thing from it...
...Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness: a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say 'no.' But saying 'yes' begins things. Saying 'yes' is how things grow.”

During his conversation with Justin, you'll hear Jason Russell lay out the first sentence of this Stephen Colbert quote, but it's the second, unspoken, part that truly fits with his journey.

During his time as Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Invisible Children, Jason pushed through hurdles that most people never even dream of encountering, showing how honesty, transparency, and passion magnify the impact each of us has on the world.

Invisible Children's KONY 2012 viral phenomenon (that little video with over 100 million views) sparked a movement due in large part to Jason's visionary storytelling, but the effects weren't all positive, especially for the Invisible Children team. While their hyperfocus on a singular goal led to incredible outward success, it also resulted in a breakdown of internal care—a topic that Jason has spoken candidly about in the years following the KONY 2012 campaign.

Doing his part to normalize our conversation around mental health isn't all that Jason brings to the table, though. You'll hear him discuss Oprah and Obama, the spectrum of activism, his reaction to renewed racial tensions in America, and bringing activism to new generations through a radical new project, Broomstick Engine.

At Apple, “open” isn’t just a word. It’s our culture. One that embraces faiths, disabilities, races, ages, ideologies, personalities, and differences. Because humanity isn’t singular. It’s plural.

Each of us, even the most cynical politician, has a child inside who desperately wants to do something that is genuinely good. We all want to change the world. So we write letters, hold protests, wave our signs, and argue on social media – but nothing gets better. Thus we lose faith in democracy and convince ourselves that lasting change cannot be achieved. After two decades of fighting the multi-billion dollar greyhound gambling industry and winning, Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil - founders of advocacy group GREY2K USA Worldwide - discovered three core lessons about successful activism. And, not only that, they saved the lives of thousands of dogs along the way. Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil are the cofounders of greyhound protection group, GREY2K USA Worldwide. As a nonprofit entity, GREY2K works to end the cruelty of dog racing and fund greyhound rescue on a global basis. Before obtaining her law degree, Christine worked as Research Director for the New England Anti-Vivisection Society. Christine specializes in pari-mutuel law and has drafted laws to successfully prohibit dog racing in several states and countries. A long-distance runner all of her life, she has competed in seven Boston Marathons to date. Carey has been sourced in hundreds of news articles and testified in favor of stronger greyhound protection laws all across the United States. In his free time, Carey volunteers for various non-profit organizations and is a National Master in chess. Christine and Carey are the co-authors of the new book, Brooklyn Goes Home.

Artist Rick Griffith is joined by Evan Weissman and Stephen Brackett to discuss non-violence and activism in art and beyond, asking the questions: How do we continue to apply pressure to our government? What is the action that moves the needle? How do you take activism from the digital world and social media to the real world? And what is the real work?

Rick Griffith is a British West-Indian Designer, typographer/letterpress printer, and writer/columnist at print magazine. After immigrating to the U.S. in the late ‘80s, it was his early jobs at Washington D.C. record stores that turned him on to graphic design. It was a (short) freelance career on Madison Avenue which funded his first practice, RGD (Rick Griffith Design), and it is his love of design (and his partner Debra Johnson) which sustains the design practice MATTER, which, over the last two decades, has grown into an ambidextrous design consultancy, print shop, workshop, and retail bookstore.

Evan Weissman is the founder and Civic Artist at Warm Cookies of the Revolution, a Civic Health Club that blends innovative arts and culture with crucial civic issues. Prior to founding Warm Cookies of the Revolution, he spent twelve years as a company member of the collaborative Buntport Theater Company, as playwright, director, designer, and actor. He also teaches courses on the radical foundations of nonviolence at Colorado College

Stephen Brackett has toured the world with his band, Flobots, using music as a platform for engagement and collective empowerment. His time as a philosophy student at Colorado State University nurtured his life-long love affair with the arts, education, and activism. Blending his passions, he co-founded the non-profit Youth on Record in 2008. Youth on Record exists to empower Colorado’s youth to achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local, professional artists as their educators.

Ali Horriyat, a former finance manager turned philanthropist, left his career in 2016 to prioritize social impact over profit. He founded Compassiviste in 2020 to further this vision. With diverse academic achievements across multiple countries, he is also an author and advocate for compassion.

Key Takeaways:
✭The desire for more and more wealth is often not merely driven by the material comforts it affords but by the control and power, it can convey. A power that, left unchecked, risks eroding the quality of our relationships and personal well-being.
✭Overcoming the scarcity mentality is vital for nonprofits. Community engagement and collective impact are more crucial than just fundraising.
✭Throwing money at problems is not going to fix anything. Real societal transformation is brought about by the collective effort and concern of people, not just by the money that they bring.
✭A strategic foundation is necessary for social impact work to thrive in the long term. Focus on sustainability, self-sufficiency, and having an exit strategy. Look beyond what’s right in front of you and invest effort and focus into creating an enduring resolution to deep-rooted problems.

“If we can prioritize compassion, through every action that we take, then we're going to be in a better place helping not only people but the entirety of our society.”
- Ali Horriyat

We’ve all experienced times when the voice in our head tells us to stay silent when we’ve seen or have been subjected to non-inclusive behaviour. Instead of listening to that little voice, it’s time to find yours and use it to #SpeakUpForInclusion.

Abstract:
Many Non-Profit organizations around the globe aim to influence social change and improve communities. A method these activists can use to help educate others about their message, mobilize their communities and cause social change is digital activism.

Digital Activism uses digital communication tools to achieve goals of social change. Successful social change campaigns often incorporate creativity and interactivity with a meaningful message for the community.

Let's explore successful strategies for digital activists:
1. Have goals and assess outcomes. Organizations must develop a strategy to achieve their goals, conduct research and assess the outcomes of the campaign efforts to succeed in their digital activism campaign.

2. Provide incentives to bring supporters in & give them a reason to stay. Consider the user's experience and play with digital tools & social media to make communication personal and meaningful.

3. Reinforce traditional means of activism.

4. Mobilize & inspire your followers. Communicating the organization's message and inspiring your followers to mobilize behind that message is by far the most important element of a digital activism campaign.

Clearly, digital activists face many challenges including, but not limited to: Internet user passivity, authenticity, online security, and information overload. These are all very real hurdles activists face, but they are not impossible to overcome.

Understand that your successful digital activism campaign will be comprised of personal sacrifice, great discomfort & wonderful learning opportunities. You will also need brilliant creative thinking to light the fire of social change.
