The UK has defended its decision to suspend some arms sales to Israel.

On 2 September, it suspended around 30 out of 350 weapons export licences to Israel, saying there is a "clear risk" the equipment could be used to commit serious violations of international law.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decision "shameful", saying on social media that it "will only embolden Hamas".

But UK Defence Secretary John Healey insisted the UK remained a "staunch ally" of Israel, telling the BBC Israel's security would not be weakened by the decision.

Husam Zomlot, the Palestinians' top envoy to the UK, called the partial ban an “important first step” to the UK’s fulfilment of its “legal obligations under domestic and international law”.

China has announced that it is ending the practise of allowing children to be adopted overseas, bringing uncertainty to families currently going through the process.

A spokeswoman said that the rule change was in line with the spirit of international agreements.

At least 150,000 Chinese children have been adopted abroad in the last three decades.

More than 82,000 have gone to the US, more than anywhere else in the world.

Three engineers at the forefront of that revolution come to London to join Caroline Steel and a public audience at the Great Hall of Imperial College.

Regina Barzilay from MIT created a major breakthrough in detecting early stage breast cancer. She also led the team that used machine learning to discover Halicin, the first new antibiotic in 30 years.

David Silver is Principal Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. He led the AlphaGo team that built the AI to defeat the world’s best human player of Go.

Paolo Pirjanian founded Embodied, and is a pioneer in developing emotionally intelligent robots to aid child development.
